Originally from the Shaare Zion Synagogue in Chelsea, Massachusetts, this Torah ark was created in the 1920s by woodworker and carver Samuel Katz, a Jewish Galician immigrant from Poland (now western Ukraine). His richly decorated Torah arks and bimahs became symbols of flourishing Jewish life in this Boston neighborhood. Hear what conservators have learned after completing work on this impressive piece of sacred architecture, and see the contrast evident in its fabrication between traditions from Katz’s former homeland and innovations of the 20th century.

With Christine Storti, head of Furniture and Frame Conservation.

Free with general admission. No advance registration or tickets required. Talks meet at Sharf Visitor Center.
