Class Schedule

April 6, 2023—Stories of America: Color Out Loud

How do contemporary artists tell stories of America? Take a closer look at “Frank Bowling’s Americas” and “Stories Artists Tell” while thinking about how artists use color to tell stories in their art. Then create a flag utilizing color symbolism to share your own story and messages of identity and belonging.

April 13, 2023—Stories of America: Who We Are (Part 1)

Take a deeper dive into “Stories Artists Tell,” looking at the use, history, and symbolism of masks in the exhibition and their connection to Native American and African masks in the Museum’s collection. Then create your own mask form using papier-mâché.

May 4, 2023—Stories of America: Who We Are (Part 2)

Continue exploring “Stories Artists Tell” while thinking about how contemporary artists tell stories of America. Then complete your customized mask using ceramic, glass, and wire.

May 11, 2023—Stories of America: A Sense of Place

Take a closer look at art created by female artists such as Georgia O’Keefe and Polly Thayer Starr. Learn more about their visions of America, as seen in their depictions of objects from the natural world, then create artwork drawn from close looking and careful observation of a personal object.
