Directed by Guillaume Senez (France, Belgium, Japan, and US 2024, 98 min.). French and Japanese with English subtitles.
In this touching drama, the formidable Romain Duris gives an intense performance as Jay, a French taxi driver in Tokyo desperate to reconnect with his daughter, Lily, after losing custody in a divorce. When Lily unknowingly steps into his cab and fails to recognize him, Jay is thrust into a powerful reckoning with loss, identity, and fractured family ties.
To lend authenticity to the story, Duris and director Guillaume Senez met with French nationals who had lost access to their children under Japanese custody laws and wove their experiences into the screenplay. Set against a calm and unglamorous Tokyo, A Missing Part is a profoundly moving meditation on parenthood, cultural divides, and the aching persistence of love.
“Carefully crafted … Duris delivers a potent, controlled performance whose self-containment always feels threatened by the possibility of explosion.… the result is tense and very rewarding." —ScreenDaily
