Special Exhibition Timed-Entry Tickets
Special exhibitions require everyone, including members and children, to purchase or reserve a timed-entry exhibition ticket and to enter the gallery within the 30-minute entry window. Special exhibition tickets include general admission for the day of the visit.

Do I need a ticket for my child or baby even though they are admitted for free?
Yes, all visitors regardless of age are required to have a ticket. Visitors with special exhibition tickets must enter the exhibition within the 30-minute window on the ticket.
How do I present tickets purchased or reserved online at the door for entry?
Visitors and members who reserve tickets in advance are encouraged to select the “Print at Home” option to receive tickets electronically. Tickets may be presented on a mobile device or printed on paper. All tickets will be scanned at the door. To speed up your entry, have your tickets ready when you arrive at the Museum.
Can I return or exchange tickets if my plans change?
Yes, if you let us know in advance, there are options for returning or exchanging tickets. See our Ticketing Policies for more information and how to contact us.
Can I purchase a ticket on-site at the Museum?
Yes, general admission and special exhibition tickets are available in person at the Museum. Please note that special exhibition tickets are timed entry and subject to availability. To ensure your visit includes one of our special exhibitions, we recommend reserving a timed-entry exhibition ticket in advance online or by phone.
Can I visit with a group? What is the largest group I can bring with me?
You may add up to 9 admission tickets to your order when reserving in advance. Group reservations (for 10 or more tickets) are unavailable at this time.
The Museum is currently rethinking the group experience. We are working to welcome groups back to the MFA in fall 2022. Please check back for updates on our progress.
Health and Safety
Do I need to be vaccinated?
Effective Saturday, February 19, proof of COVID-19 vaccination is no longer required for entry into the Museum, in accordance with the lifting of the City of Boston’s B Together policy.
Do I need to wear a mask?
Masks are not required in the galleries, but are recommended.
Visitors are required to wear masks while attending events in Remis Auditorium and Alfond Auditorium.
What should I do if I don’t feel well on the day of my visit?
If you or a guest are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 on the day of your visit (fever, cough, chills, and/or difficulty breathing) or are quarantined due to exposure to COVID-19, we ask that you stay home and contact the MFA at tickets@mfa.org or 617-267-9300 for assistance with rescheduling your visit.
How is the MFA keeping me safe during my visit?
The Museum has enhanced cleaning protocols in place and hand sanitizing stations can be found throughout the building. The Museum’s heating and ventilation systems have upgraded filters that remove the particles that carry viruses, and the systems have also been adjusted to bring outside air into the building more frequently. We recommend that visitors wear face masks indoors, but masks are not required.

Is the Fenway Entrance open?
No, the Fenway Entrance is currently closed.
Are coat checks open?
Yes, we offer complimentary coat check at the Huntington Avenue Entrance.
Bags smaller than 11 x 15 inches are welcome. Backpacks must be carried as a handbag or worn on the front side of the body. Bags in excess of 11 x 15 inches containing needed medical equipment, or for use in nursing or baby care, are allowed in the Museum if tagged at arrival.
Are the gift shops open?
The Linde Family Wing Bookstore and Shop on Level 1 is open. Other retail operations are temporarily closed.
Can I get something to eat?

Are all the galleries open?

Can we stay in the Museum as long as we like?
Your ticket is valid until the Museum closes, but there is no re-entry to special exhibitions.
Will there be guided tours offered during my visit?
In-person guided tours are suspended at this time.

Can I use my membership card for admission?
For general admission, membership cards admit MFA members daily per the limits of their membership level. For special exhibitions, timed-entry tickets are required for all visitors (members, nonmembers, children) for specific exhibitions; members cannot gain entry to special exhibitions with their membership card alone. Members have access to free or discounted special exhibition tickets, limited to the benefits of their membership level. We encourage all members to reserve tickets in advance online or by phone.
If my plans change, can I exchange or return my special exhibition ticket?
Yes. We know sometimes plans change—if yours do, please help more people in our community enjoy the Museum by rebooking, exchanging, or canceling your tickets ahead of time. We hope you come to the Museum as planned, but if you decide not to, other visitors might miss out if you don’t use your timed-entry tickets.
Members, if you need to reschedule:
- To reschedule timed-entry special exhibition or any paid tickets, contact us in advance of your visit date by calling 1-800-440-6975 to exchange your tickets for another date. Tickets are non-refundable, but can be exchanged prior to the visit date. A $4 exchange fee applies.
- If you do not arrive for a special exhibition at your ticketed time, you will forfeit your limited free exhibition ticket(s) and we will not be able to reschedule you for another time slot.
