Local performer Mal Barsamian discusses the origins, construction, and music of the 'ūd, a type of lute that is considered the most highly esteemed instrument of the Islamic world. A focus of the program will be two outstanding 'ūds from the MFA’s collection, one made in Constantinople in 1899 by Emanuel Venios, and the other made in Damascus in 1928 by Tawfik Nahat. Both Venios and Nahat are considered the most significant makers of such instruments from modern times, and the Nahat 'ūd is arguably the most highly decorated example ever created.
