REPRISE is a call-and-response performance that maps a Black un-American lineage. Join poet and artist Golden to explore what’s possible through the individual act of naming oneself and one’s people here as a way forward against anti-Black allegiance in the United States.

Responding to the exhibition “Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina,” Golden uses work by enslaved potters and poets; conversations with family from Pocomoke City, Maryland, and Hampton, Virginia; and their own photographic self-portraits as portals to consider Black life. Through this poetic performance that reaches beyond survival as the sole mode of living, Blackness becomes the faith, the family, the flag, the freedom, and a revival.

Golden (they/them) is the author of A Dead Name That Learned How to Live (Game Over Books), REPRISE (Haymarket Books, forthcoming 2025) and the photographic self-portraiture series On Learning How to Live.
