Learn about the ways in which Africa is at once a point of origin and a myriad of real and imagined associations for many Black artists working in the Americas. Some artists self-consciously engage with what and philosopher Alain LeRoy Lock called “those ancestral arts,” while others practice African artistic traditions passed down through generations. Look at how Black artists grounded their work and infused it with strength and insight by turning their gaze inward toward Africa.
