Artful Adventures offers specially designed in-person home school classes for kids and teens. Taught by trained Museum educators, these age-appropriate programs last two hours, include a pre-tour activity, gallery exploration, and a related art lesson. Class tickets include general admission to the MFA for the student and one accompanying grown-up.

October 21, 2022—The Art of Games: The Game Board

From ancient times to today, games have been a way to spend time with other people and engage in a little friendly competition. Take a look at examples of game boards in the Museum’s collections then create a board for your own game!

October 28, 2022—The Art of Games: Dice and Movement

Take a closer look at artwork that can be moved and manipulated such as dice and dice boxes from the Renaissance and ancient Greek and Roman knucklebones and ephedrismos. Then create the movement device for your game in the studio.

November 4, 2022—The Art of Games: Characters and Pawns

Discover how game pieces can be miniature works of art while taking a closer look at games from ancient Greece and Mesoamerica, 16th-century miniatures, and game pieces made out of fish vertebrae from ancient Greece. Then create characters or pawns for your game using wood and acrylic paint markers.

November 11, 2022—The Art of Games: Cards

Many games often require players to use cards. Discover how cards have been used from ancient to modern times while taking a closer look at paintings featuring card game scenes, a 19th-century card counting device, and dance cards. Then create a set of printed cards with embellished designs for your game!

Ticket Information

Each four-session ticket package must be purchased in advance, and is only available for sale online until noon on the Monday before the first session.

Class tickets include general admission to the MFA for the student and one accompanying grown-up. Supplies are provided.

We regret that there is no make-up, refund, or rescheduling for classes missed by a child, even those due to inclement weather. Refunds are given only if the class is cancelled by the MFA.
