Directed by Stefan Liberski (France and Belgium, 2024, 90 min.). French with English subtitles. New England premiere.
Jean-Yves Machond (Benoît Poelvoorde), a once-promising conceptual artist whose career has fizzled, abandons his teaching job in Brussels and heads to the Normandy coast in search of artistic rebirth. In the picturesque town of Étretat, he’s drawn into the orbit of an affable local painter (Gustave Kervern) and a sharp-witted gallery owner (Camille Cottin), whose influence gently derails his ambitions.
Blending melancholy and dry humor, this adaptation of Jean-Philippe Delhomme’s novel La dilution de l’artiste reflects on creativity, ego, and the unexpected pleasures of doing nothing at all.
