Directed by Alice Rohrwacher (Italy, France, Switzerland, and Turkey, 2023, 131 min.). Italian, English, French, Portuguese, and German with English subtitles.
Everyone has their own chimera, something they search for but can never quite reach. For the band of tombaroli, thieves who plunder ancient graves for archeological wonders, the chimera means redemption from work and the dream of easy wealth. For Arthur (Josh O'Connor, Challengers; The Crown), a lost soul with a gift for divining the location of underground treasure, the chimera looks like the woman he lost. To find her, Arthur challenges the invisible, searches everywhere, and goes inside the earth—in search of the door to the afterlife of which myths speak.
The screening will be followed by a conversation with MFA experts in Mediterranean antiquities and provenance, exploring the film’s themes and the ethical responsibilities of museums in collecting ancient artifacts.
“Enchanting … Alice Rohrwacher may be the most quietly mischievous time traveller at work—or at play—in contemporary cinema.” —New Yorker
