In the past, Egypt was seen as the pinnacle of civilization in the ancient Nile Valley. More recently, scholars have argued that Nubia actually held cultural primacy. In the eyes of Dr. Aaron de Souza of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the concept of Egypt and Nubia as opposing cultural centers is outdated. In this talk, de Souza makes the case that the ancient Nile Valley was deeply interconnected—to the point where it’s not easy to tell where one culture ends and another begins.
