Join Ann and Graham Gund Director, Matthew Teitelbaum; Estrellita and Yousuf Karsh Senior Curator of Photographs, Kristen Gresh; collector and gallery dealer Howard Greenberg; and photographer Paul Sutton as they reflect on Henry Ross’s photographs of the Lodz Ghetto in Poland.
A group of forty-eight of Ross’s photographs were recently donated to the MFA by Greenberg—the group of rare prints had originally been given directly by Ross to Lova Szmuszkowicz, later Leon Sutton (1909–2007), a fellow survivor of the Lodz Ghetto who brought them to the US when he immigrated to New York City in 1947. Safely kept in an envelope for almost three-quarters of a century, the photographs were inherited by Sutton’s son, Paul; he understood their importance after seeing the MFA exhibition “Memory Unearthed: The Lodz Ghetto Photographs of Henryk Ross."
