A Splinter in Your Mind: Films from ’99

August 2–30, 2019

“You’ve felt it your entire life, that there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad.”—Morpheus, in The Matrix

Teetering anxiously on the edge of a new millennium, the year 1999 brought a rash of films designed to shake viewers awake, compelling us to face the next thousand years with our eyes wide open. Lilly and Lana Wachowski’s The Matrix made us question authority and the nature of our reality; Kimberly Peirce’s astonishing Boys Don’t Cry brought American transphobia into public conversation; David Fincher’s Fight Club was a call to anarchy. This August, join MFA Film on a journey through what many critics have called the best year for American film, ever.

All films in this series will be presented on 35mm film.
