Time Lapse: Day 2, Removing the Facing Layers

The three layers of paper facing applied on the first day, which served to stretch out and relax the painting overnight, are removed. Conservators then alternate between spraying the back of the painting with water, covering under plastic to create a humid environment that promotes loosening of creased areas, and brushing out with “smoothing” brushes that have bristles made from hemp palm fibers. Next, the old lining behind the most heavily creased areas are removed using tweezers.
