150 Years of Giving

Soon after the MFA opened in 1870, Bostonians donated art to build the foundation of the Museum’s encyclopedic collection. These donors were visionaries who wished to share art with the public by placing their treasured collections in the care of the MFA. Since then, generous donors have contributed to the Museum’s growing collection, including transformative gifts in recent years.

This tradition of generosity continues with you. Gifts of art and funds for the purchase of art allow the Museum to continue to build and enhance a world-renowned collection—enriching our understanding of the past and revealing the unfolding story of the present. Donating art or funds to purchase art makes you eligible for recognition in the Denman Waldo Ross Society.
