Learn how to develop loose sketching style, lost edges, and human storytelling used by the masters. By fusing both classical and modern techniques, translate light, color and form into fine charcoal drawings and learn how to simplify complex compositions using basic principles of value, gesture, and line.

Adult students are expected to bring their own supplies: please view our supply lists online here. If your class is not listed, supplies will be provided on the first day and the instructor will review supplies to bring for the following classes.

Ticketing Policies

About the Instructor

Classically trained painter Lisa Sawlit splits her time between Nantucket and Boston, where she has a studio. She is a former instructor at Montserrat College of Art. In addition to teaching, Sawlit has worked at Wisdom Publications, she’s studied philosophy, trained in ophthalmology, worked in philanthropy, and even tried her hand at finance, serving as creative director at from 1997 to 2001. Sawlit has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in fine arts from Tufts University and her work can be seen in her publication Drawing the Cast, The Emulation of Aesthetic Values, Five Études of the Apollo Belvedere, as well as numerous solo and group exhibitions in the New England area.
