Working in oils, learn to paint the human face by combining gallery observations with studio practice. Get instruction on capturing facial features, mood and light with a live model and see demonstrations on such portraiture elements as preparing under-paintings, brush work, color mixing, and finish mediums.

About the Instructor

Classically trained painter Lisa Sawlit splits her time between Nantucket and Boston, where she has a studio. She is a former instructor at Montserrat College of Art. In addition to teaching, Sawlit has worked at Wisdom Publications, she’s studied philosophy, trained in ophthalmology, worked in philanthropy, and even tried her hand at finance, serving as creative director at Fidelity.com from 1997 to 2001. Sawlit has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in fine arts from Tufts University and her work can be seen in her publication Drawing the Cast, The Emulation of Aesthetic Values, Five Études of the Apollo Belvedere, as well as numerous solo and group exhibitions in the New England area.
