This course combines fundamentals of art-making—line, gesture, shading, texture, proportion, and composition—with exercises intended to help identify and develop each student’s unique visual language in color and unlock their personal artistic style. Students learn in a collegial and collaborative environment through a variety of fun and challenging two-dimensional art-making activities using drawing, painting, and collage.

Registration for February, April, and Summer vacation week classes ends at Noon the Friday before the class starts.

Due to the building’s historic architecture, the third-floor classrooms, 305A, 305B, 305D and 305E, are not wheelchair-accessible and must be accessed by stairs. Please let us know in advance if the student has limited mobility; we can make accommodations, including relocating the class to an accessible space.

About the Instructor

Karl Stephan holds a Masters in Art Education from the Tufts School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Expert in traditional and contemporary techniques of drawing and other two-dimensional media, Karl is a Medici Artist at Tufts and a well-regarded curator. In addition to his popular museum drawing classes for teens, Karl teaches privately in his Cambridge studio.
