The MFA’s world-renowned collection of Japanese art, closed for the past several years, has reawakened in all its splendor, dignity, and excellence. Japan came late to the world stage yet the principles of Japanese aesthetics coalesced immediately and still hold true today: affection for nature, respect for the past, the play of complementary opposites, and the potential of outside contact. The strength and breadth of the Museum’s comprehensive collection highlights Boston’s great treasures in all their glory. These four sessions of in-gallery close looking also explore the Japanese garden, weather permitting.
