The massive destruction of life and property of the Civil War that literally pitted brother against brother blew a huge hole in America's sense of nationhood. Yet the country picked itself up and turned its attention to asserting a new national unity as well as a growing international presence. Explore how artists responded with images of hope and optimism as well as nostalgia for a simpler past, and reflections of both the promise and the despair of the new national order.
