In the 18th century, Great Britain and the Continent impacted American fine arts not only through the arrival of European artists, but also through imported pattern books, engraved copies of Old Master paintings, and plaster casts of antique statuary. But in the late 18th century a trickle of aspiring American artists started moving to Europe—a movement that grew exponentially in the 19th century. Examine works by American painters and sculptors who brought the latest European artistic developments to bear on their work, abroad and at home, in the 19th century.
