Hear RISD professor of printmaking Andrew Raftery discuss his ambitious eight-year project Autobiography of a Garden (2009–16), a set of 12 earthenware plates with transfer engravings, each depicting the artist tending his Providence garden during a different month of the year. Thomas Michie, Russell B. and Andrée Beauchamp Stearns Senior Curator of Decorative Arts and Sculpture, places Raftery’s work in the context of traditional 19th-century transferware, and Raftery shares favorite examples of engraving from the collection.
