Join us for a discussion on “Matthew Wong: The Realm of Appearances,” an exhibition that explores the full scope of works Wong created in a short period of time and reflects on his persistent pursuit to capture humanity’s relationship to the world beyond the physical realm. Featuring approximately 40 works in a variety of mediums including oil, ink, watercolor, and gouache, it offers the first formal account of how Wong adeptly synthesized many inspirations—from the Fauvists to 17th-century Qing period ink painters to contemporaries he admired—to create a visual language uniquely his own.
Hear from curator Vivian Li, the Lupe Murchison Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art, as she gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the first museum retrospective and first US museum exhibition devoted to the self-taught artist.
