Join us to learn the story behind the creation and history of a 16th-century sculpture from the Benin Kingdom. Conservator LeeAnn Gordon describes the casting techniques artists used to combine two separate alloys to brilliant effect. Curator Kathryn Gunsch shares the region’s dramatic history in this period and considers the subject—is it a Benin king or his greatest enemy?
