Directed by Monia Chokri (Canada and France, 2023, 111 min.). Quebec French with English subtitles.
In this sharp and sexy rom-com, a 40-year-old philosophy professor named Sophia leaves her husband of ten years to start a relationship with the contractor hired to renovate her vacation home. But as the new lovers get to know each other on a deeper level, the difference in their backgrounds starts to cause friction, and Sophia begins to question lusty recklessness with which she abandoned her reasonably happy marriage.
Director Monia Chokri infuses this grown-up comedy with incisive commentary on social class and taste, while deftly illuminating the age-old struggle between eroticism and security in romantic relationships. The Nature of Love premiered at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard to rave reviews, subsequently beating Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer in the Best Foreign Film race at this year’s César Awards.
“As sharp and perceptive as it is funny…. with the crackling connection between Lépine-Blondeau and Cardinal, the picture has struck gold.” —Screen Daily
