Directed by Kitarō Kōsaka (Japan, 2018, 94 min.).

Okko’s Inn is the latest feature from famed anime studio Madhouse and director Kitarō Kōsaka, a key animator on numerous classic films at the venerable Studio Ghibli. Seamlessly blending immersive, idyllic landscapes with storybook charm, Okko’s Inn delivers a rare ghost story that is firmly grounded in the trials and joys of humanity.

Japanese music and art-making activities starting at 6 pm with DJ Yuzu Kosho and make-your-own Koi Kites!

DJ Yuzu Kosho's musical selection runs the gamut from the retro kitsch to contemporary experimental sounds from Japan, weaving together the post-war cry-in-your-sake-cup enka songs, fresh city pop sounds of the 1970s, tropical Okinawan folk tunes, and the cutting-edge sounds of the underground scenes from free improv from Nagoya and progressive rock of Koenji to indigenous Ainu dub from Hokkaido.

Make a Koi Kite!

The koi fish is revered in Japanese culture as a symbol of strength, energy and courage. Koi fish kites are flown on a Japanese national holiday called Children’s Day, every May 5th. Inspired by the koi kite flying scene in the heartwarming film Okko’s Inn, make your own mini koi kite! Use colored pencils, glitter pens, and markers for color, and sequins for crisp details like fish scales. Bring your kite home to hang up as a reminder of courage and strength!

Taste is open before and throughout the screening with special Japanese snacks. We invite you to grab a light snack or drink to bring into the theater!

Co-presented with Anime Boston.
