Directed by Mona Achache (France and Belgium, 2023, 95 min.). French with English subtitles.
French writer and photographer Carole Achache took her own life in 2016, leaving behind thousands of photos, letters and recordings. As her daughter, filmmaker Mona Achache, carries out the difficult work of archiving this trove, she finds herself searching for the source of her mother’s anguish. To help her make sense of Carole’s life and death, Mona enlists actress Marion Cotillard to embody her mother, wearing her clothes and reciting her recorded musings with Carole's exact tone and inflection. The result is a sui generis hybrid between documentary and drama that plumbs one of France’s great minds and brings out a complex array of treasures, among them a towering performance from Cotillard that earned a nomination for the César Award for Best Actress.
“A prismatic study of performance and cinema as subjective conduits of reality.… a testament to the inner lives of parents that their children never fully know.” —Variety
