Directed by Alexander Payne (USA, 1999, 103 min.). 35mm.

In the second film by comedy auteur Alexander Payne (Sideways, The Descendants, About Schmidt) Matthew Broderick plays civics teacher Jim McAllister, who loves his job and is adored by students. When Jim notices that star student Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon) is using questionable tactics in her campaign for student body president, he interferes by convincing a popular jock to run against her—earning him a small but formidable foe. Though it’s a comedy set in a high school, Payne’s film reveals much about real-world American politics, where cutthroat careerism often trumps ethics and intellect.
