The post-graffiti moment in 1980s New York City marked the transition of street art from city walls and subway trains onto canvas and into the art world. At the forefront of this transformational, insurgent movement in contemporary American art was Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988). The exhibition “Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation” features his works in painting, sculpture, drawing, video, music, and fashion, alongside works by his contemporaries. Join curator Liz Munsell for an in-depth exploration of “Writing the Future,” the first major exhibition to contextualize Basquiat’s work in relation to his peers associated with hip-hop culture.

Liz Munsell, Lorraine and Alan Bressler Curator of Contemporary Art

This session is led via Zoom and includes opportunities for questions and dialogue.
