Conservation Project: Upholstered Furniture Photos

Before treatment: The original webbing is missing and later webbing has failed, providing no support for the upholstery above.

Before treatment: Without the proper support, the seat materials had fallen out of the bottom, causing the seat edges to collapse.

During frame construction: The new frames sit inside the chair rails and are secured in place with brass brackets. New webbing is attached to support the springs.

After re-upholstery: Seats are well supported by the new frames. The pieces now have custom woven green damask show covers over the original upholstery filling materials. (Examination of the show fabric had revealed that the current green silk velvet is the third generation cover. Two previous green show covers, including small fragments of the original satin weave silk, were found below.)
