The Making of Western Myth, Feb 11-28, 2010
In the MFA series The Making of Western Myth, we're featuring the films John Ford shot in Monument Valley. Ford used the desert region to represent the geography of the entire West, and constructed Monument Valley to suit America’s vision of the “Wild West.” Ford was well aware that his movies were mostly fantasy. Although his films lack historic authenticity, he created wonderful stories and entertaining images. In Ford’s later films, however, he began to reevaluate his portrayal of Native Americans, explore their customs and culture, and to question the US Western expansion.
