| The Boston Jewish Film Festival Film Room and a Half 7 — 9:10 pm Thursday, November 5, 2009 Remis Auditorium
Room and a Half (Poltory komnaty ili sentimentalnoje putesestvije na rodinu) by Andrey Khrzhanovsky (Russia, 2009, 130 min., 35 mm). Forced into exile in 1972, Russian-born, liberal, Jewish Josef Brodsky became our country's poet laureate and won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Arguably one of the greatest Russian poets of his time, Brodsky would feel right at home in former animator Khrzhanovsky’s swirling dream of a film. By no means a straightforward biography, the film takes liberties with the poet’s life, merging live action, still photography, and animated silhouettes to mirror the sources of Brodsky’s own work. “Inspired by a poet, Khrzhanovsky has created his own poetry” (Variety).
In Russian with English subtitles.
