Women on Film Film She is the Matador 3 — 4:05 pm Thursday, November 5, 2009 Remis Auditorium
She is the Matador (Ella es el Matador) by Celeste Carrasco and Gemma Cubero del Barrio (Spain, 2009, 64 min.). Nothing expresses Spain’s traditionally rigid gender roles more powerfully than the image of the male matador. So sacred was the bullfighter's masculinity to Spanish identity, that a law in 1908 barred women from the sport. She is the Matador reveals the surprising history of women who made such a law necessary and offers fascinating profiles of two female matadors currently in the arena: the acclaimed Mari Paz Vega and neophyte Eva Florencia. Two women are breaking barriers, but their truest motivation is their sheer passion—for bullfighting and the pursuit of a dream. "Artfully blend[s] history, nail-biting action, and the parallel tale of a veteran matador into a winning portrait…spirited and vital." (Silverdocs AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Film Festival).
