| Gallery Activities Gallery Talk: Luxuries from Japan: Cultural Exchange in the 17th and 18th Centuries 6 — 7 pm Wednesday, November 4, 2009 Sharf Visitor Center Japanese inlaid lacquer chests and porcelains (blue- and- white, Kakiemon and Imari) were all part of Europe’s insatiable appetite for luxury goods, which ornamented its royal palaces and stately homes. In contrast tea ceremony (chanoyu) taste in Japan required an array of different types of objects including unique tea bowls and containers, some from Korea and Southeast Asia, for the elite in Japan. Complex shipping partnerships with the Chinese, Portuguese and Dutch East India company facilitated the international exchange of luxury goods in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This gallery talk is led by Anne Morse, William and Helen Pounds Senior Curator of Japanese Art, and Angie Simonds, curatorial planning and project manager, Art of Asia.
