Japanese Cinema Film The Human Condition (Part 1) 10:30 am Saturday, December 27, 2008 Remis Auditorium
The Human Condition by Masaki Kobayashi (1959-61, 587 min.). A three-part expose by Japan’s master of socially critical cinema, the film centers on the Japanese occupation of Manchuria and the dehumanization of war. The labor boss Kaji, brilliantly played by Tatsuya Nakadai, tentatively tries humane methods in a raging barbed wire world of oppressed workers, cruel Army superiors, and starved Chinese POWs, but underestimated the brutality of army life. The Human Condition offers dazzling black and white photography, featuring the greatest cloudscapes on screen and an enormous supporting cast comprised of many Japanese screen legends like Minoru Chiaki, So Yamamura, and Chishu Ryu. Critic A.O. Scott says the film is “amazingly powerful in its emotional sweep and the depth of its historical insight. Kobayashi's monumental film can clarify and enrich your understanding of what it is to be alive." Description adapted from Film Forum.
