Icilio Consalvi: Boston Banjo Maker, with James Bollman
11 am — 12 pm
Musical Instruments Gallery

Join noted banjo historian and collector Jim Bollman for the story behind Boston’s most outstanding decorator of high-quality banjos, guitars, and mandolins during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Drawing on instruments and related historical material from his own collection, Bollman will trace the work of Icilio Consalvi and how his highly detailed inlay and engraving work elevated the standards of banjo making during the heyday of the instrument, culminating in his masterwork, an instrument made in 1895 that was recently donated to the MFA. Joining Bollman will be banjoist Geoff Freed, who will demonstrate selected instruments.
Free with MFA admission.
